Springtime In Mammoth!

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Though we’ve had record snowfalls this winter, it doesn’t mean the fun has to stop as the temperatures rise. There are selections of golf courses in the area to unwind and enjoy the weather. Mammoth is geologically unique, providing fresh powder and hot springs and fishing spots just a short drive away. After spending a morning on the slopes, take a dip in the Hot Creek or Buckeye natural hot springs located a few miles from the Mammoth Yosemite Airport and Mammoth Mountain.

There are three hot spring locations in the Mammoth region; Hot Creek, Travertine and Buckeye. Some offer visitors a backdrop of the Sierras, while others have a nearby campground for those who plan to relax in the hot spring around the clock. The hot springs are a short drive from the city; it is the perfect activity for outdoors enthusiasts who want to escape. Because the hot springs are remote enough from the urban centers, there are no commercial food establishments, so be sure to bring a picnic basket!

Golfing is another great way to make the most of the spring season in the Sierra Nevadas. Bishop Country Club is a well-maintained 18-hole course that is challenging for golfers of all experience levels. This club has a fully-equipped Pro Shop with rental clubs and carts available and almost every golf accessory or apparel you can imagine. You are also more than welcome to just hit some balls at the driving range or spend time in the practice bunker and chipping area.

Lastly, because the eastern Sierras are surrounded by several gorgeous lakes and creeks, fishing is a great way to explore the area. It is a great way to either lay back and catch the sunrise or experience a different outdoor adventure. Interested anglers over the age of 16 must have a fishing license. They are available for purchase at several locations in the Mammoth Lakes vicinity. A Downtown for Mammoth Lakes Is In the Works!

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

There has always been a need to develop Mammoth’s Main Street into a “true downtown”. The community has shared the importance for Main Street to be more of a pedestrian-friendly business district. According to the Town of Mammoth Lakes, “this could set the stage for new public and private reinvestment in the community.”
The Downtown Neighborhood District Planning put together a vision for Main Street which could result in a “walkable, mixed use downtown that offers shopping, dining, entertainment, lodging and housing within easy walking distance.” This would create opportunities to help business and property owners as well as attract investment. This vision depends on the several different factors in order for it to become a reality. The cooperation between the different agencies and the individual property owners will have a big impact on the decisions related to the final plan.
The plan includes three different Catalyst Sites. The first site includes the USFS Property which is currently located north of Main Street. This property would be acquired through a land exchange and used for a new civic center complex centered around a town square. This would also be the location for the upgraded housing for the USFS employees. The second site is the Town/County property south of Main Street at Sierra Park Road. This site will be the location for the combined sports park and open-air events facility for summer concerts and festivals. The final site is Shady Rest. According to the Town of Mammoth Lakes, “the Downtown District Concept envisions that the Shady Rest site would be a livable workforce housing neighborhood with a mixture of income levels and housing types.”
If this plan goes through and is approved, it will give Mammoth Lakes a distinctive downtown that will be more attractive to visitors from all over the world.
